Dad and Sports….

Although there are exceptions, for many of us, our first exposure to sports comes through our dads.  Whether its coaching your little league team, taking you to a ballgame, or just watching it on television with him, those of some of most peoples memories.

For me, its no different.  In fact, my dad, most likely, has a lot to do with the reasons I love sports so much.  He is a huge sports fan himself.  He was my little league baseball coach for most of the years I played.  He was one of my first football coaches.

The first couple of vacations I remember involved baseball, in part.  I remember a trip to St Louis to see the Cards and a trip to Texas in which we took in a double header between the Rangers and As.

I can remember Dad taking us fishing when we were young.  But most of all, I can remember watching sports on television with dad.  And let me tell you, watching a game with dad was always entertaining.  For those that hear how excited I tend to get calling a game, if you could see video of  Dad watching a game with us when we were young, you might just understand where I get it.

But as much as dad enjoyed seeing those guys play on television, nothing compared to the pride he had in watching me and my brothers compete.  I probably did not realize that until long afterwards.  He was always there, no matter what.  Baseball, football, wrestling, basketball, cross-country, track, soccer…you name it, if we were competing He was there, front and center, cheering us on.

As an adult one of my favorite times has been taking Dad to see an OU football game.  It was freezing cold and our seats were horrible, but it did not make a difference.  I was getting to see the Sooners play at Owen Field and Dad was with me.  That will be hard to top.

I still love talking sports with dad.   He may not realize the differences in cover two vs cover three or other technical aspects of the game, its not that kind of thing we talk about anyway.

The internet and streaming of the games I broadcast has allowed him the opportunity to listen to me.  He has become a fan of kids that he has never met and most likely never will meet.   But, just like when I was eight years old, He is my biggest supporter. I can just imagine him there, watching with a big smile on his face.

To dad:  Thank you hardly seems to be enough.  While we never had a lot of money you gave me EVERYTHING.  I am forever grateful.

To all the dads our there…. HAPPY FATHERS DAY…
